Impact of Women-Owned Businesses

Women in business are a driving force in the nation’s economy. Women are starting and running businesses at an impressive rate—and they’re doing so with demonstrable skill and expertise. In celebration of National Women's Small Business Month, CSB is shining a spotlight on women entrepreneurs.

According to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), there are more than 14 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. This is even more astonishing when you consider that there were only 402,000 women-owned businesses in 1972.

Women-led businesses generate a staggering $2.7 trillion annually, as reported by the WBENC. Unfortunately, though, that $2.7 trillion represents just 5.8% of total firm revenue nationally.

Another women-in-business statistic from WBENC points out that just under 4 out of every 10 U.S. businesses are women-owned. Of course, this ratio still isn’t proportional to the gender breakdown of the U.S. population as a whole, but significant progress has been made over the past decade.
